PITTSBURGH, Oct. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Mylan's AbbVie announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement with Mylan Pharmaceuticals to acquire the rights to the patent on tadalafil (Cialis) and related products in the U. S. for $1 billion, contingent upon successful completion of regulatory submissions by the U. Patent and Trademark Office.
"I am pleased that Mylan will be able to bring my product to market and will be able to demonstrate to the U. Patent and Trademark Office that I have demonstrated the benefits of tadalafil and that I have demonstrated the potential for improved patient adherence," said AbbVie Chief Executive Officer and President Cindy Whitehead. "Mylan will receive milestone payments of approximately $35 million for the upfront payment. Mylan will be able to continue to launch its products in the U. and will be able to launch its generic products in the U. within the next few years. I am very pleased that Mylan has agreed to acquire Mylan's exclusive right to market its generic products to the public."

A new study suggests that men who have tried drugs such as Viagra may have erectile dysfunction in a placebo-controlled study of more than 100 men.
The study, published online Friday in theNew England Journal of Medicinemagazine, was part of the ongoing, double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical trial for the treatment of men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Researchers found the men in the study had erectile dysfunction, and men who had tried drugs such as Viagra were more likely to experience erectile dysfunction.

“These results raise the possibility that Viagra may have some beneficial effects on men with ED.”
Other researchers said that the findings were surprising because they also suggest that Viagra is the only drug that has shown to have an effect on men with ED.
The researchers examined data from the first three placebo-controlled trials of Viagra in men with BPH — which includes men with erectile dysfunction. The men were randomly assigned to one of the study’s eight treatment arms, including 10 men with erectile dysfunction and 4 men who were not taking the drug.
Viagra was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of ED in 1998. In 2007, the drug was approved for use in the United States by a combination of Pfizer and Merck.

“I was stunned,” Nissen said. “I was like, ‘Oh, it’s not working. It’s not working. I don’t know how long.’ ”
Viagra was approved by the FDA in 1998.
In 2012, Merck began to market a generic version of Viagra, which was approved for use in the United States by a combination of Pfizer and Merck.
Nissen said in an interview with the New York Times that “we think it’s a very important drug. It’s a drug that should be used as a treatment for ED.”
The drugs were originally developed to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, but they were later developed to treat the symptoms of enlarged prostate.
The drugs are marketed under different names, including “Viagra,” “Cialis,” “Levitra,” and “Staxyn.”
